FPwatch is PSI's multi-country research project designed to provide relevant, high quality evidence to inform and monitor family planning policies and programs. The project is currently implemented in 5 countries through funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Three MDG Fund. National family planning market outlet surveys collect information about contraceptive availability, price, market share and service readiness. See www.actwatch.info for more information.
Under the leadership of the Project Director, the FPwatch team is comprised of a Deputy Director, a Principal Investigator, Research Fellows, Research Associates, and a Data Manager. A central team of Research Fellows work with PSI Country Program Coordinators (based in PSI country platforms) to collect and analyze quantitative survey data using standardized methods and tools. FPwatch seeks a qualified candidate to fill the position of Research Associate.
The consultant will report to the Principal Investigator that is based in Washington, D.C. and will be assigned to India to assist with the implementation of the 2016 FPwatch outlet survey. The period of performance of the consultancy will be from February – April, 2016 with the first month in New Delhi, India and the following two months in either Bihar or Uttar Pradesh, India.
Scope of Work
Training Support (4 weeks)
The consultant will work closely with the FPwatch Research Fellow and PI to ensure training is conducted according to FPwatch standard operating procedures (SOPs). The consultant will be responsible for the following activities.

  • Ensure materials are printed prior to the start of training.
  • Facilitate training presentations as required (non-technical presentations).
  • Organize and supervise the pilot study. Observe interviews and review completed questionnaires.
  • Provide feedback after the pilot test and help revise the training materials and data collection tools if needed.
  • Monitor tests, mark tests and assist in the selection of fieldworkers.
    Data Collection Support (8 weeks)
    It is expected that data collection will take approximately 8-10 weeks. Data collection errors and logistic challenges usually occur during the first half of data collection. As such, the consultant will remain in India for the first 8 weeks of data collection to supervise data collection teams to ensure data collection is conducted according to FPwatch SOPs. The consultant will be required to travel with fieldwork teams to remote areas in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh States.

  • Observe fieldworker interviews and provide feedback.

  • Assist with electronic data collection challenges.

  • Review electronic questionnaires to identify common data collection errors.

  • Track survey progress to ensure sample size requirements are being met.

  • Ensure the census is being conducted as stipulated in the SOPs.

  • Identify challenges / problems and communicate them to the Research Fellow.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree (MPH, MSc, etc.) in statistics, demography, epidemiology or other related field.
  • Field experience in South Asia preferred.
  • Strong quantitative data management and analysis skills.
  • Excellent communication and training facilitation skills.
  • Experience designing and conducting/managing quantitative research fieldwork training, data collection, and data entry in developing countries is preferred.
  • Electronic data collection experience (CSPro) preferred.
  • Family planning research experience preferred.
  • Hindi fluency/proficiency preferred.
