In an effort to measurably improve UNICEF's ability to deliver better results for children, there is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a society’s most disadvantaged citizens — addressing inequity — not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfill their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. This is why the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

The Resource Mobilization and Partnership (RM&P) section works with the corporate sector, Foundations and Major Donors to maximize income and drive income growth. There are three pillars within RM&P. The purpose of the Partnerships team is to drive income growth from Corporates, Foundations and Major Donors.The pillar will lead the development of these existing and new areas to grow these income streams as well as developing relationships at a global level with high value individual supporters and large-scale international foundations.

The Philanthropy Specialist, will work under the direct supervision of the Partnerships Manager (L-4) and general guidance from Chief, Field Office and will be responsible for providing strategic support to accelerate financial growth from major donors.

The Philanthropy Specialist will be responsible for structuring, implementing and monitoring a highly effective development and donor services programme working closely with UNICEF staff to support and embrace the mission of UNICEF India. This position serves in a full range of development functions including prospect research, cultivating new, prospective donors, encouraging effort for current donors, connecting with professional advisers, other door openers and donor stewardship to grow assets in order to reach the annual and long-range development goals of UNICEF. This position is also responsible for growing our donor base as the premier “go to” agency on philanthropy. It requires maintaining and evolving our best in class development programme that is opportunistic in its approach by adapting to changing market trends.

Key function, accountabilities and related duties/tasks:

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  • Work with the Partnerships Manager to map and prioritize the greatest foundation opportunities for UNICEF India and to build relationships with high level foundation partners to maximize influence, resources and knowledge that can advance UNICEF’s mission.
  • Undertakes independent research to identify and profile leading major donor and/or foundation prospects, developing cultivation strategies for identified prospects in conjunction with UNICEF PFP.
  • Provide dedicated support to strategic initiatives in major donor fundraising, including major donor giving circles, and matching giving arrangements with foundations.
  • Inspire and engage a group of elite donors and volunteer leaders interested in promoting and supporting children’s rights.
  • Coordinate efforts to inform and engage donors through events, communication pieces and donor networking opportunities.
  • Build and grow funds through pipelines and planned gifts annually.
  • Build a full-service philanthropic services that produce increasing results from individuals, families and corporations. Institutionalize philanthropic services for consistency and quality control.
  • Create opportunities for philanthropy conversations (special events, meetings, donor and prospect events, annual meetings, etc.).
  • Perform any other duties, as required.
  • Impact of Results:

    1) Describe the type of decisions regularly made and the impact of those decisions

    In-depth support for strategic initiatives creating innovative giving vehicles for philanthropic giving. Identify the best approach to working with and relationship management of prospective partners. Optimize the approach to a designated high level partners is necessary to achieve the income targets with the foundation and high value individual supporters funding stream.

    2) Describe the type of recommendations regularly made and why these are important

    Makes recommendations to the Chief of RM&P and the Partnerships Manager regarding the relationship management and level of interaction of the partners. This will involve risk assessment of the potential relationships and careful weighing of the scale of the funding available against potential risks.

    Makes recommendations to the designated partners regarding their potential and actual support of UNICEF programmes. These recommendations will influence whether UNICEF receives large grants to support programmes.

    Makes recommendations to Chiefs of Programme Outcomes and State Offices regarding proposal and reporting content. The selection of the right programmes proposals and effective reporting of these programmes will be critical to maximizing income from key influencers.

    3) Describe the most damaging error(s) that could be made in the work and the consequences they would have

    Inadequate assessment of the objectives and aims of partners will lead to missed funding opportunities. In addition, poor relationship management of established partners will put at risks millions of dollars expected funding for UNICEF programmes.

    Requirements of the position (QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES):-

    Education:

    An advanced University Degree in marketing, international development, business administration or closely related fields required.

    Experience:

    Five years in relatively senior role in major donor and/or foundation fundraising or analogous business development experience. Seniority indicated by management of others, and/or by direct relationship cultivation and management of high value partnerships.

    Preference will be given to candidates with experience managing partnerships and/or securing major gifts with a value in excess of USD 5 million.

    Knowledge of the UN system, and familiarity with UNICEF programme activities are desirable.

    Language Requirements:

    Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language or a local language is an asset.
