The Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) is an independent public health foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland, established with the support of UNITAID. Context:
MPP has entered into licence agreements for intellectual property and technology on multiple novel medicines which is being used by an increasing number of manufacturers to develop generic versions of these medicines including innovative formulations and fixed dose combinations. This growing portfolio currently comprises more than 60 pharmaceutical development projects with companies in India and China. Further, there is an increasing interest among companies outside India and China, where the generic industry has been traditionally concentrated to manufacture medicines under licence from the MPP.
MPP’s public health and financial impact is closely linked to timely development, introduction and widespread availability of generics by its partners. It is also important that MPP partners carry out their activities per requirements of their agreements. Hence, MPP closely monitors projects, activities and results produced under its licence agreements. A growing portfolio of partners and projects and rapid advancement in current projects is generating wealth of information that is important for MPP’s objectives.
