Alive & Thrive is scaling up improved maternal infant and young child feeding and nutrition (MIYCN) practices, through large-scale behavior change programs in several countries in Asia and Africa and through strategic technical support and the dissemination of innovations, tools, and lessons worldwide. Alive & Thrive is funded by the Bill &Melinda Gates Foundation and the governments of Canada and Ireland.

Job Summary / Responsibilities:
This is a one-year position with the possibility of extension. The position is based in New Delhi and linked to the headquarter team of Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) experts in Washington DC. A&T is seeking a SBCC expert with 8-12 years overall experience and at least 3 to 5 years program experience in South Asia or similar settings, in designing, implementing and monitoring multi-channel behavior change interventions, preferably in the area of maternal nutrition and/or infant and young child feeding.
The A&T/India based SBCC Technical Advisor is expected to provide leadership and support in development, implementation and monitoring of the SBCC component of A&T/India’s initiative. The initiative involves providing technical support to government and other stakeholders interested in strengthening their behavior change activities relate to MIYCN. For example, the World Bank is managing a multi-donor trust fund for strengthening nutrition impacts through behavior change strategies focused on MIYCN and have requested technical support from A&T to guide this effort. This is a newly created position and has been developed to help A&T/India apply its global SBCC experience and expertise related to MIYCN through technical support, advocacy and capacity building with designated national level partners. This position will play a major role at the national level to inform the government and donor-led development of evidence based interventions and plans for improving nutrition related behaviors. A part of the effort will go to supporting the SBCC staff in A&T state teams in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, and ensuring that state-level learning helps to inform national dialogue on MIYCN practices. This is a unique opportunity to contribute in a strategic way to applying the best of global SBCC approaches to improving MIYCN in India.
- Using the latest global technical recommendations (WHO, Lancet, UNICEF, other sources) and the Program Framework developed by A&T for improving nutrition behaviors at scale, and the approaches, examples and tools developed by A&T in phase 1 (see A&T website and Food and Nutrition Bulletin Supplement 2013), provide guidance on evidence-based interventions and comprehensive implementation strategies to ensure MIYCN results on a large scale in India.
- Provide technical input, leadership, and coordination for the design and implementation of SBCC program components, particularly community-based and mass media elements (behavior change communications, capacity building, advocacy, monitoring and learning).
- Provide leadership to and oversight of the adaptation, field testing, development and application of state of the art approaches, messages, materials, and tools for behavior change.
- Provide oversight to the SBCC program components at the state level in UP and Bihar; and maintain close communication and coordination with state A&T SBCC officers and State Directors/Managers.
- Develop a multi-stakeholder network for SBCC in preventive nutrition/MIYCN and implement directly and through other stakeholders, an overarching MIYCN behavior change communication initiative
- Support capacity building efforts for SBCC strategies and program components to benefit the government nutrition initiatives such as through NHM, WCD, NRLM and other sectors at the national and state levels.
- Help develop annual work plans and project reports, and ensure timely reporting and responses for information to HQ and to donors.
- Manage SBCC related procurements; ensure that A&T procurement and branding requirements are met for all activities and final products including presentations, in consultation with A&T/HQ.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in one of the following or related fields: Sociology, Rural Development, Marketing, Public Health, Human Nutrition, International Health, Behavior Change Communications, Behavioral Science.
- 8-12 years of relevant professional experience required with at least 5 years in a senior technical leadership role providing technical input to a large scale international nutrition or behavior change or public health project across multiple sectors in a developing country (preferably S. Asia)
- Extensive knowledge of infant and young child feeding and maternal nutrition and related topics.
- Design, development, oversight and/or program implementation and/or operations research of multi-channel communication and community activities
- Familiarity with nutrition indicators especially maternal nutrition and IYCF practices, data collection, analysis, and reporting; preferably articles published in peer reviewed journals.
- Ability to work independently, assess priorities, and manage a variety of activities while communicating, connecting, and collaborating with HQ and field office staff, subcontractors, and a broad coalition of government and NGO partners in collaborative manner
- Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills; and team work
- Outstanding organizational and management skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Excellent writing, editorial, and communication skills, including strong oral presentation skills
- Fluency in English is required; preferably Hindi also
