We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Intern Coordinator to join our 2016 India Team. Development in Action (DiA) is a UK registered charity (No. 1149279) which exists to promote global citizenship by improving understanding and encouraging engagement in development issues amongst young people in the UK.
For over 20 years DiA have connected young people in the UK with the issues affecting the m and their fellow citizens around the world through the India Placement Scheme. The position is for a fixed duration with flexible working hours. The India Programme Coordinator (IPC) will be expected to provide support to interns during structured visits and also be contactable at all times. The successful applicant will ideally need to be located within the UK for recruitment and training and subsequently be able to travel to India to coordinate a team of passionate young interns whilst on placement. You will support the delivery of pre-departure intern training, plan and deliver an in-country orientation week, co-ordinate volunteer support during their placements and liaise with DiA’s partner organisations. This summer we will be sending a cohort of interns to India for two months from July-August, and another group for six months starting in September.
Person Specification
Essential
• Prior experience of travelling or working overseas, preferably in India and willingness to travel frequently.
• Voluntary experience, having worked with and preferably supported other interns or volunteers.
• Enthusiastic with an ability to engage with people from all backgrounds.
• Self-motivated and constantly look forward to new challenges.
• Enjoy working under pressure and the challenge of balancing the needs of different interns at the same time.
• Creative thinker with the ability to develop and communicate new solutions.
• Ability to work both within a team and independently.
Key Skills
Volunteer Management - the most important part of your role.
To prioritise the physical and emotional well-being of the volunteers and to help maximise their experiences both in India and as volunteers. Integral to this is designing and delivering Orientation Weeks to support interns' preparation for their placement role.
Project coordination
To act as point of contact for activities within India, taking the lead in supporting volunteers as and when necessary with logistical advice, arranging visits to each placement partner to monitor volunteer activity, and maintaining and updating procedures with support of India team in UK.
Relationship management
To maintain the link between partner organisations in India and the DiA Committee in the UK. As DiA's eyes and ears in India, this involves representing the wider DiA committee and trustees in a responsible and professional manner, dealing with challenging situations that may arise effectively and sensitively.
Digital Communications
To assist the UK committee in sharing and promoting volunteer and partner organisations through social media, photography and collating volunteer and/or India-specific news.
If successful, the India Programme Coordinator (IPC) must be able to attend the interview date, volunteer training week-end and the overseas dates in India.
